Parliament Invites Public Participation Over DP Gachagua’s Impeachment – Venues and Deadlines

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has announced a nationwide initiative to gather public opinion on the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

This development comes in the wake of a motion tabled by 291 legislators, signaling a significant political shift in the country’s leadership dynamics.

Speaker Wetangula emphasized the constitutional basis for this unprecedented public consultation. He stated,

This constitutional provision forms the bedrock of the decision to extend the impeachment deliberations beyond the confines of Parliament to all 47 counties.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Wetangula added,

A gazette notice issued on Wednesday outlined the logistics for public participation:

1. Timing and Format: Public hearings are scheduled for Friday, October 4, from 8 am to 5 pm across the country.

2. Submission Methods: Citizens can make either oral or written submissions during these hearings.

3. Centralized Collection: All views gathered will be forwarded to the Clerk of the National Assembly.

4. Digital Option: Submissions can be emailed to impeachment@parliament.go.ke.

5. Deadline: All submissions must be received by October 5.

    The notice detailed specific locations for public gatherings:

    • Nairobi Region: The Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) will host constituents from multiple constituencies including Westlands, Dagoretti North and South, Lang’at, Kibra, Roysambu, Kasarani, Ruaraka, various Embakasi divisions, Makadara, Kamukunji, Starehe, and Mathare.
    • Central Kenya: The Kiambu Social Hall is designated for residents of Gatundu North and South, Juja, Thika, Ruiru, Githunguri, Kiambu, Kiambaa, Kabete, Kikuyu, Limuru, and Lari

    The motion, presented by Kibwezi West MP Eckomas Mwengi, has garnered significant support with 291 legislators signing it. This level of backing ensures the motion’s progression to the resolution stage.

    Following parliamentary procedures, Speaker Wetangula is expected to communicate the resolution to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi within two days for further action.
