Kericho County Assembly has voted to impeach Governor Eric Mutai. The motion, which was passed with an overwhelming majority of 31 members voting in favor, was initiated by Sigowet Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kiprotich Rogony.
The impeachment process stems from a series of grave accusations against the governor, including gross constitutional violations, abuse of office, and misappropriation of public funds.
Governor’s Absence and Legal Representation
Despite the expectation of his presence to defend himself against these serious charges, Governor Mutai was conspicuously absent from the proceedings. Instead, he dispatched a legal team led by prominent attorney Katwa Kigen.
The governor had reportedly attempted to halt the impeachment process through a court order, but this legal maneuver proved ineffective as the order was allegedly not served in time, allowing the motion to proceed as scheduled.
Allegations of Land Misuse and Environmental Violations
Among the litany of accusations, MCA Rogony highlighted a particularly troubling incident involving land misappropriation. He stated,
“The governor has been operating with impunity by leading a mob to invade a piece of land owned by a private resident within Kericho town and reserving the land to be used as a dumpsite without NEMA’s approval.”
This action not only raises questions about the governor’s respect for private property but also his adherence to environmental regulations.
Sexual Misconduct Claims
In a shocking revelation, Rogony brought forth allegations of sexual misconduct against Governor Mutai. The MCA asserted that multiple women had come forward with complaints, accusing the governor of coercing them into inappropriate sexual activities.
To protect the identities of these alleged victims, Rogony confirmed that their testimonies would be heard in camera during the motion hearing.
Intimidation and Hostile Work Environment
The impeachment motion also addressed Governor Mutai’s alleged abuse of power within the county government. According to the document,
“The governor has persistently intimidated, harassed county officers who do not sing to his tune leaving officers jittery and creating an atmosphere of fear, uncertainty and despondency in the county and thus creating a toxic work environment.”
This accusation paints a picture of a leadership style that stifles dissent and fosters a climate of fear among county officials.
