NACADA Issues Alert Over SHA Accreditation Scam

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) has uncovered a fraudulent scheme targeting rehabilitation centers seeking accreditation under Kenya’s new healthcare system. The scam involves imposters claiming to expedite NACADA accreditation and SHA recognition for a fee.

Taking to their X platform, the Authority provided clarification on their official accreditation process: 

To combat these fraudulent activities, NACADA has established a three-step response protocol, directing the public to refuse payment requests, report incidents through their hotline (1192), or contact local law enforcement. NACADA clarified that 

The warning comes amid an ongoing transition period where rehabilitation facilities must secure updated NACADA accreditation to qualify as SHA-recognized providers. The Authority recently launched a digital registration platform for facilities, with the enrollment window having closed the previous Friday. 

Registered facilities stand to gain multiple benefits beyond SHA recognition, including access to professional development resources, employment opportunities, and increased participation in Kenya’s substance abuse prevention and treatment programs. This is intended to support NACADA’s efforts in the fight against the effects of drugs among other steps taken like going after influencers who promote substance use.
