The Kenyan National Assembly has called for public input on the proposed Supplementary Estimates No. 1 for the 2024/2025 fiscal year.
This budget revision, presented to the National Assembly on July 12, 2024, aims to reduce government spending across all three branches by KSh 156.39 billion. The cuts affect both recurrent and development expenditures significantly.
Public Participation is in Compliance with the Constitution
This public participation initiative adheres to Article 118 (1)(b) of the Kenyan Constitution, which requires Parliament to facilitate citizen involvement in legislative and other governmental processes.
The Speaker has tasked the Budget and Appropriations Committee with overseeing this process and gathering public opinions.
The National Assembly stated on their X (formerly Twitter) account:
“The Budget & Appropriations Committee is further required to guide the process, seek public views & report to the House on or before Wednesday, 24th July, 2024, to enable the House to consider the Supplementary Estimates and the Supplementary Appropriation legislation”
The proposed budget adjustments seek to reduce recurrent expenditures by KSh 34.04 billion and development expenditures by KSh 122.35 billion. Overall, this represents a 6.6% reduction from the original 2024/2025 fiscal year budget estimates.
