The recent release of renowned Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel from prison sparked widespread conversation, but it was his altered appearance that truly captured attention. A noticeable swelling of his face raised concerns about his health.
Graves’ disease: A Serious Diagnosis
Earlier this year, a sworn medical affidavit obtained by Fox 5 News revealed the alarming truth about Vybz Kartel’s condition. His private doctor confirmed that he suffers from Graves’ disease and a deteriorating heart condition, which could be fatal without urgent surgical intervention.
These health issues have caused the swelling in his neck and face, as well as prominent eye bulging, requiring the constant use of glasses.
Vybz Kartel’s Resolve
Speaking about his health challenges and the euphoria of freedom after 13 years in prison, the father of seven expressed his determination to manage his condition. He revealed plans for regular medical appointments and a specialized diet to monitor his health closely.
“Healthwise, you know, I’m working on my health right now, but being free is a fantastic feeling. I could be better, but I’m super upbeat. I have appointments with my doctor on Monday so that I can have regular meetings with her, and she can keep track of me in real-time,”
Vybz Kartel shared with Fox. He added,
“She even mentioned that she’s going to… put me on a special diet so she can monitor me every day, which is a far cry from when you’re in prison. I’ve hit the ground running.”
Understanding Graves’ Disease
Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder that disrupts the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. This vital organ, located at the base of the neck, produces hormones regulating metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and other essential bodily functions.
In Graves’ disease, the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to overproduce hormones. This condition, known as hyperthyroidism, leads to a range of symptoms.
A common sign is the development of a goiter, a visible enlargement of the thyroid gland. Other symptoms include irregular heartbeat, excessive sweating, sensitivity to temperature changes, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue.
Graves’ ophthalmopathy is another characteristic symptom affecting the eyes. Inflammation and bulging of the eyes can cause discomfort, dryness, blurred vision, and in severe cases, vision impairment or double vision.
