The 23-year-old midfielder has inked a two-year contract with the Terrors, with the club retaining an option to extend for an additional year, pending international and Scottish Football Association (SFA) clearance.
Dundee United, eager to bolster their squad for their return to the Scottish top flight, announced the acquisition on their official website, stating:
“Dundee United are delighted to announce the signing of Richard Odada from MLS Eastern Conference side Philadelphia Union on a permanent transfer.”
Make it Happen!
Odada, who represents Kenya’s national team, the Harambee Stars, expressed his enthusiasm for the move. He revealed,
“As soon as I heard there was interest at the end of the season, I just said ‘make it happen!’ to my agent.”
The young midfielder added that he is “excited by the demands” at Dundee United, both from the fans and his new teammates.
This transfer marks Dundee United’s ninth signing of the summer transfer window, highlighting the club’s ambition as they prepare for their return to the Scottish Premiership.
Odada’s arrival adds depth and quality to the midfield, with the player bringing a wealth of international experience despite his young age.
Prior to joining Dundee United, Odada spent the previous season on loan with Danish club AaB. His career path has been notable, having attracted attention from European giants in his youth.
Trials at Inter Milan and Juventus
The Kenyan had trial stints with prestigious clubs such as Inter Milan and Juventus before successfully signing with Red Star Belgrade, the 35-time Serbian champions, at the age of 19.
Jim Goodwin, Dundee United’s manager, highlighted Odada’s diverse football experience across three continents as a key factor in their decision to sign him. Goodwin praised the player’s adaptability and courage to challenge himself in various footballing environments. Goodwin explained to the club’s website.
“Despite his relative youth, he has varied experience across world football on three continents, something that illustrates versatility and courage to test himself in different environments.”
He further elaborated on Odada’s qualities, stating,
“Richard possesses an ideal balance between technical ability and physicality, both qualities that will significantly improve our midfield.”
The Kenyan midfielder pledged to give his utmost in training and on the pitch, aiming to support his teammates and satisfy the fans’ expectations.
