4.2 Million Prepaid Meters Updated So Far
According to a recent press release seen by Tujue Media, Kenya Power reported significant progress in their nationwide upgrade initiative. As of July 15, 4.2 million customers had successfully completed the update process for their prepaid token meters.
This achievement marks a substantial step forward in the company’s ambitious “Update Token Meter Yako” campaign, which was launched on June 12, 2024, with the goal of updating all 7.4 million prepaid meters throughout Kenya.
Rosemary Oduor, Kenya Power’s General Manager for Commercial Services and Sales, expressed her appreciation for the public’s cooperation:
“We thank all our customers for their support in this ongoing global exercise. So far, we are happy that over 56% of all our prepaid customers have updated their meters so that they can continue to enjoy access to electricity.”
Simplified Access to Update Codes
If you lose your prepaid meter code, dail *977# to be able to retrieve it.
Kenya Power has implemented this user-friendly backup system for those who lose their update code before updating their meters. Oduor elaborated on this convenient solution:
“We have made sure that any prepaid customer is able to get their codes, even in cases where they have lost the SMS. By using our USSD code *977#, any customer can access their codes once their meter has been scheduled. We are also utilising our social media pages to make this exercise seamless for all our customers.”
This USSD service ensures that customers can easily retrieve their reset and update codes, even if they’ve misplaced the original text message containing this vital information.
Phased Approach to Meter Updates
To ensure a smooth and efficient upgrade process, Kenya Power is implementing the token meter updates in carefully planned phases. As of July 15, over 7.2 million prepaid token meters had been scheduled for updates across various stages of the initiative.
The company reassures customers who have not yet received their reset and update codes that they are in the queue for processing.
With the total target of 7.4 million prepaid token meters in sight, Kenya Power has confirmed that the remaining approximately 200,000 meters will be scheduled for updates in the coming days, ensuring complete coverage of their customer base.
Oduor provided further details on the update process:
“Once a meter is scheduled, a customer receives an SMS notification and thereafter, the update codes are sent to the customer upon purchasing their electricity tokens. Our customers are required to update their meters as soon as they receive their codes to continue enjoying access to electricity. We are therefore kindly urging those who have not updated yet to purchase their tokens upon which they will receive their codes and be able to update their meters.”
August 31st Deadline
As the August 31 deadline draws near, Kenya Power continues to emphasize the importance of this update for all prepaid meter users, encouraging prompt action to ensure continued access to essential electricity services.
