Let’s face it; urban living can be overwhelming. The traffic, the acrid smell of vehicle exhaust, and the relentless pace of city life gradually wear down even the most resilient souls.
When exhaustion sets in, finding ways to recharge becomes not just a luxury, but a necessity. For me, nature has always been the ultimate balm. There’s something deeply therapeutic about natural surroundings.
Fortunately for Nairobi residents, such an escape lies just minutes from the Central Business District: the magnificent Karura Forest, spanning an impressive 1,063 hectares of protected woodland.

Karura Forest Location
Nestled in Nairobi’s northern reaches, Karura Forest is thoughtfully designed with multiple access points. While the forest boasts six entrance gates in total, five are available for public use, each offering its own unique approach to this natural wonderland.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to all entrances:
1. Gate A: This gate serves as the principal entrance, strategically located on Limuru Road across from the Belgian Embassy. Visitors from Nairobi can reach this gate via two equally convenient routes: a 22-minute journey (8.9 km) along Limuru Road, or an alternative 22-minute drive (9.7 km) via Muthaiga Road. This entrance features ample parking and complete visitor facilities.
2. Gate B: Maintains its status as a restricted service entrance, closed to public access to preserve certain operational aspects of the forest.
3. Gate C: Dubbed “Sharks Gate” due to its proximity to the popular Sharks nyama choma restaurant across Kiambu Road, has become a favorite among cyclists and dog walkers. Its trails are particularly well-suited for these activities, offering both challenge and charm.
4. Gate D: Caters exclusively to pedestrians, accessible at the terminus of the ICRAF access lane. While vehicles cannot enter here, it provides an intimate approach to the forest for those on foot.
5: Gate E: Mirrors Gate D’s pedestrian-only status and sits opposite Gate A on Limuru Road. Visitors arriving by car must utilize the parking facilities at Gate A before accessing this entrance.
6. Gate F: Provides dedicated access to the Sigiria block, a distinct section of Karura Forest. Located at the end of Thigiri Lane off Thigiri Ridge Road, this entrance offers convenient internal parking for visitors exploring this unique portion of the forest.
