Government Responds to Abduction Claims Following Finance Bill Protests

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration, under CS Kithure Kindiki, has addressed allegations of abductions and enforced disappearances following recent Finance Bill protests in Kenya. The statement, posted on social media platform X on July 9, 2024, aims to clarify the government’s stance and actions.

Demonstrations occurred between June 18-27, 2024, initially peaceful and focused on freedom of assembly and petition rights. The government claims these were later co-opted by violent criminals who robbed protesters, attempted to burn Parliament, and vandalized the Chief Justice’s office.

This comes after the ODPP ordered the investigation into property destruction during the protests.

Government’s Stance On  Human Rights

The statement seeks to emphasize Government’s commitment to upholding constitutional rights to demonstrate, while emphasizing these must be exercised within legal boundaries. It stresses that human rights are inalienable and cannot be revoked by any authority.

As discussions on taxation and national priorities continue, the government reports ongoing investigations into crimes resulting in casualties, property damage, and public disturbances during the protests. Authorities commit to prosecuting organizers, planners, and financiers of these acts.

Law Enforcement Accountability

The statement addresses police conduct during the demonstrations, assuring that any misconduct by law enforcement will be investigated and appropriate action taken against those found responsible.
