Free Maternity Care Returns: Government Launches Linda Mama Under SHA

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has announced the much-anticipated resumption of the Linda Mama Program, which had been suspended for the past year.

This development marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes.

SHA’s acting CEO, Elijah Wachira, emphasized the program’s accessibility in a public notice posted on X (Formerly Twitter). He stated,

This announcement aims to ensure that expectant mothers across Kenya can benefit from the program without delay.

There are two ways to register for Linda Mama under SHA:

Since its inception in 2013, Linda Mama has played a crucial role in providing maternal care to approximately 7.5 million expectant mothers.

The program’s impact was particularly notable in the 2022/23 financial year, during which 1 million mothers benefited, with over 70% of deliveries taking place in public healthcare facilities.

The Linda Mama program will transition under the management of Social Health Insurance (SHIF), set to commence in October 2024. SHA has outlined that SHIF will offer comprehensive coverage for expectant mothers, including:

The transition from NHIF to SHIF aims to ensure seamless and enhanced benefits for mothers under the Social Health Authority’s management.

Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Dr. Deborah Barasa Mulongo had made a personal pledge to revive the Linda Mama program.

During her appearance before the National Assembly vetting committee, CS Barasa shared her policy framework for revitalizing the health sector and addressing challenges in implementing the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

Notably, CS Barasa revealed her personal connection to the program, stating that both she and her daughter have been beneficiaries of Linda Mama.
