48 elected leaders from the Mount Kenya region and its diaspora have officially named Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their regional kingpin.
The Nyahururu Summit
On Thursday, September 12, in Nyahururu, Laikipia County, a crucial meeting took place that would redefine the political strategy for the Mount Kenya region. The gathering, attended by a diverse group of lawmakers, resulted in a unanimous decision to endorse CS Kindiki as their link to the national government.
The legislators released a joint statement highlighting the urgency of their decision:
“Given the prevailing state of affairs and the urgency of the mission ahead, there is need to have a link that will create a nexus between us and the National Executive on matters development. Accordingly, we, as the elected leaders from this region and its Diaspora on our own behalf and that of our people, unanimously resolve that our link to the National Government be the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration Prof. Kithure Kindiki, whose responsibilities includes the coordination of National Government functions across Country.”
Frustrations and Challenges
The lawmakers expressed their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, citing several key issues:
- Lack of a focal point: The absence of a central figure to channel the interests and priorities of Mount Kenya residents has hampered development efforts.
- Misplaced political focus: The region has been plagued by politics centered around supporting individual ambitions rather than pursuing the collective interests of constituents.
- Intimidation tactics: Some MPs claimed they faced “condescending threats of dire political consequences” for not supporting certain personal interests and ambitions.
In their own words, the legislators stated:
“Our attempts to call the region to the orderly prioritization of the developmental needs of the people has been frustrated by condescending threats of dire political consequences unless we support certain personal interests and ambitions.”
